The Climbing Experience

Most climbers begin their journey in Quito, acclimatizing in nearby peaks before attempting Cotopaxi. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

Day 1: Arrival & Acclimatization

Your adventure starts with a scenic drive from Quito to Cotopaxi National Park, followed by a trek to the José Ribas Refuge at 4,800m (15,748ft). This helps with acclimatization before the summit push.

Cotopaxi Travel recommends acclimatizing a few days beforehand so you can climb without problems. Remember that 70% of the climb depends on good acclimatization. For this, you can visit our mountain lodge, Ilinizas Mountain Lodge, located at 3,300 meters (11,800 feet), ideal for acclimatization. From the lodge, you can take guided and self-guided hikes.

Day 2: Summit Attempt

The climb begins around midnight, navigating through glaciers and crevasses. After 6-8 hours of climbing, you’ll reach the summit just in time for sunrise, witnessing an unforgettable view above the clouds. After a short celebration at the top, the descent takes around 3-4 hours back to the refuge.

Tips for a Successful Climb

  • Acclimatize Properly: Consider climbing other peaks like Saquihua Hill, Corazon ,  Iliniza Norte (5,126m) beforehand.
  • Train for Endurance: Cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and stamina are key.
  • Pack the Right Gear: Warm layers, waterproof clothing, mountaineering boots, gloves, and a headlamp are essential.
  • Go with Certified Guides: Professional guides ensure safety, proper navigation, and a higher chance of reaching the summit.
