This climbing tour leads you to the Illiniza Sur (5246m/17,211ft), the sixth highest mountain in the country. Located Southwest of Quito, near the El Chaupi Village, tThe southern peak has deglaciation changes caused by global warming, affecting its ice conditions, and is thus now reserved only for experienced ice climbers. Hence, expertise on ice techniques is requested. The South peak contains several challenging and demanding routes. This 2-day climb starts at night from the Nuevos Horizontes shelter at an altitude of 4700m.
Day 1: Nuevos Horizontes Refuge (4700m)
We will leave from Quito (9,186ft/2800m) in the morning and drive through the Avenue of the Volcanoes until we get to the village of “El Chaupi” and then “La Virgen parking lot” (12,795ft/3900m). Once there, we will start a 3-hour hike up to the “Nuevos Horizontes Hut” (15,580ft/4750m). We will relax for the rest of the afternoon. Dinner will be served by late afternoon. (BL/D)
Day 2: Summit Iliniza Sur (5246m/17,211ft)
Our day will start very early, at 2am with a substantial breakfast that will be served by our kind staff and then we will head to the base where our technical climb will begin. The estimate climbing time from the base to the summit of this magnificent volcano is about 3 or 4 hours. Once at the top, you will be given time to rest, enjoy the view and take memorable pictures of the scenery. Our way down should not take more than 2 hours, before we return to the refuge. We will pack our stuff, return to the La Virgen parking lot and drive back to the village of El chaupi to celebrate the summit with a delicious lunch in Alpes Andes café before returning to Quito.
