Climb Cotopaxi Summit (2 days)

 GROUP  4 TO  10 CLIMBERS 

ITINERARY

Day 01: Cotopaxi Refuge 4864 m.
Day 02: Summiting Cotopaxi 5897 m. 

Day 1: Cotopaxi Refuge

Elevation: 4864 m./15,958 ft.

  • We will leave Quito early in the morning around 11:30 a.m. and we will drive south along the Avenue of the Volcanoes until we reach the town of El Chaupi. This town is the location of Cotopaxi-Travel’s homebase, there we will prepare all the necessary equipment for the ascent. We will have lunch at Andes Alpes Restaurant, and then we will continue to the entrance of Cotopaxi National Park. From here, we will head east to the Cotopaxi parking lot (14,764ft/4864m) and then we’ll hike for about an hour to the José Ribas Refuge (15,951 ft. / 4862 m.). Then we will have dinner and rest until midnight. At this point we will pack our belongings and get ready to make our final ascent.

Day 2: Cotopaxi Summit

Elevation: 5897 m./19,347 ft

  • Midnight will be our wake up time and the departure to the top (19,347ft/5897m) will be around 1am, after having a light breakfast and getting our stuff ready for the ascent. At the entrance of the glacier, your guide will explain all necesary tips needed for using crampons and ice axe if needed. The climb will take us about 6 to 8 hours and once at the summit we’ll take our time for pictures of the crater and surroundings, and then we’ll head back down the refuge, which will take us 2 to 3 hours. Once at the refuge we will pack our belongings, have something to eat and go down to the parking lot, where our transportation will be ready to take us back to Quito (9,186ft/2800m).
  • Meals: Light breakfast before the ascent and full breakfast after the ascent

    Day 01: Cotopaxi Refuge 4864 m.
    Day 02: Summiting Cotopaxi 5897 m. 

    Day 1: Cotopaxi Refuge

    Elevation: 4864 m./15,958 ft.

      Day 1: Hike Pasochoa Volcano

      Elevation: 4200 m./13,779 ft

      1. We will pick you up at 8:00 am.Then we will drive for two hours to get to Pasochoa parking lot. We will then hike through a large forest and when we are in the middle of it, the 4230-meter summit will appear. There is a steep sloop on the ascent, but once there we will have beautiful views. We will drive to El Chaupi village. Overnight at Andes Alpes base camp.

      3. Accommodation: ILINIZAS MOUNTAIN LODGE 3300 m

      Day 2: Summit Corazón Volcano

      Elevation: 4788 m./15,708 ft

      1. From El Chaupi village. We will start early in the morning after breakfast 7:00 We will be driving up to the trailhead (13,120ft/4.000m), where we start our hike. The first part of the hike takes us up through the small Andean grass. Then we will get on the sandy and scramble section, which leads to Corazon summit. We will have lunch during the hike that is about 6-hour long. Return to the hostel.

      Day 3: Summit Iliniza North

      Elevation: 5126 m./16,818 ft

      • We start early in the morning after breakfast 7:30 We will be driving up to the “La Virgen parking lot” (12,795ft/3.900m). Once there, we will start a 3-hour hike up to the “Nuevos Horizontes Refuge” (15,580ft/4.750m). We will relax for couple of minutes and we took the opportunity to put our helmet and harness for continue hiking up towards the saddle formed between both peaks and then head up to Illiniza north summit; it will take us between 2 to 3 hours to get to the summit, the way back to the parking lot it will take us between 2 hours. Drive back to El Chaupi. Overnight at the Hostal or Lodge.

      Day 4: Quilotoa Lagoon Rest day

      Elevation: 3914 m./12,841 ft

      1. We’ll leave from El Chaupi in the morning and drive the Quilotoa Lagoon. During the tour we will stop at an Indian hut and visit the Tigua community to observe the leather crafts that they make here. The tour will about 4 hours, then we’ll arrive the viewpoint and admire the size of the crater and its lagoon. We will then descend along a varying road which will take us an hour until we arrive at the bottom of the lagoon. There we will take photos and rest, then after lunch we will be back in El Chaupi after 3 hours driving.

      Day 5: Cotopaxi Refuge

      Elevation: 4864 m./15,958 ft

From here will drive east to the Cotopaxi parking lot (4.500m/14,763 ft) then we’ll hike up for around an hour to the Jose Ribas Refuge. Then we will have dinner and rest until midnight.       Day 6: Summit Cotopaxi

            • This is a relaxing day; in this beautiful town you can do it different activities that can be purchased on behalf of the passenger. It's a free day its surroundings offer many possibilities like: the route of the waterfalls, hikes inside the “cloud forest”, besides, depending on our interest, with an extra cost, we could try rafting, rock climbing, bungee jumping, mountain biking, horseback riding, etc. Night in hotel.

            Day 8: Chimborazo High Camp

            Elevation: 5300 m./17,388 ft

            • In the morning at 9:00 am we will meet with the guides to drive to the Chimborazo wildlife reserve. We will arrive at the refuge Hermanos carrel from there we will start the hike to the High camp in approximately 2 to 3 hours we get to camp once here, we will accommodate in our tents. In the afternoon we will prepare and double check all the gear for the climbing. Where we’ll have dinner and get some rest until 23h00. There will be an early light breakfast served just before getting ready with our gear and start heading up.

            Day 9: Chimborazo Summit

            Elevation: 6.268m. /20,702 ft

            • At midnight we will start our climb to the top of Ecuador’s highest volcano, Chimborazo, which will take us about 8 to 9 hours. We’ll get to the summit (20,702ft/6268) in the early hours the perfect spot for resting and pictures of the beautiful surroundings. Then we’ll start our descending to the refuge; it will take us from 3 to 4 hours. Once in refuge we’ll pack our gear, where our transportation will be ready to drive up to Quito.

            Climb Cayambe Cotopaxi and Chimborazo (14 days)

            Detailed Program

            Day 1: Arrival to Quito Altitude: 9.350 ft / 2850 m. Arrival to the beautiful city of Quito, capital of Ecuador, depending on the time of arrival you can visit the historic center and its surroundings or rest for the next day. Overnight in Quito

            Day 2: Hike to Pasochoa Summit Altitude: 13,778 f t./4230 m We will pick you up at 8:00 am. Then we will drive for two hours to get to Pasochoa parking lot. We will then hike through a large forest and when we are in the middle of it, a 4230 -meter summit will appear. There is a steep sloop on the ascent, but once there we will have beautiful views. We will drive to Machachi village. Overnight at Ilinizas Mountain Lodge.

            Day 3: Hike to Corazón Volcano Summit Altitude: 15708.66 ft./ 4788 m. From El chaupi village.             Day 4: Hike to Nuevos Horizontes Refuge Altitude: 15419 ft. / 4700 m. We start in the morning 10;00 am. We will be driving up until to get “La Virgen parking lot” (12,795ft/3.900m). Once there, we will start a 2-3 hour hike up to the “Nuevos Horizontes Refuge” (15419 ft. / 4700 m). We will relax for the rest of the afternoon. Dinner will be served by late afternoon overnight at hut.

            Day 5: Climb Iliniza Norte Summit Altitude: 16,818 ft. / 5126 m. We start early in the morning after breakfast 4:30. We will put on our helmet and harness for continue hiking up towards the saddle formed between both peaks and then head up to Illiniza north summit; it will take us between 2 to 3 hours to get to the summit the way back to the parking lot it will take us between 2 hours. drive back to El Chaupi.

            Day 6: Arrival at the Cayambe Refuge Altitude: 15,091 ft. /4600m. Cayambe is a massive glaciated extinct volcano. It is located about 70 km Northeast of Quito and is the highest point on the surface of the earth through which the Equator directly passes. Cayambe is the third highest mountain in Ecuador. It is characterized by good climbing opportunities and impressive glaciers. With easy access from the comfortable hut Ruales Oleas Cayambe Refuge. We will arrive at the shelter after about 3.5 hours of driving and rest for a couple of hours at the Refuge, until dinner time.

            Day 7: Climb Cayambe Summit (18,996 ft. / 5790 m.) We will wake up at midnight, eat a light breakfast, put our gear on and start our climb around 01:00 in the morning; the ascent takes about 6 to 7 hours. The route to the summit follows a safe glacier terrain to the summit. A gaping bergschrund sometimes presents a challenge in route finding and an exciting extra obstacle. Once at the summit (18,996ft/5790 m) we will take our time for pictures of the surroundings, and then we will head back to the refuge in 2 to 3 hours. At the Refuge we will rest for a while, then pack our belongings and drive to "El Chaupi"

            Day 8: Quilotoa Lagoon - Rest Day Altitude: 12841.207 ft. / 3914 m. We’ll leave from El Chaupi in the morning and will drive the Quilotoa Lagoon; during the tour we will stop at an Indian hut. After we will visit the Tigua community to observe the leather crafts that people make in these places. The tour will take us about 4 hours later, we’ll arrive the viewpoint where you can observe the magnitude of the crater and its lagoon background. We will descend along an irregular road; the walk will take us one hour until arrived bottom of the lagoon, there we will have taken photos and rest. After lunch we will back to El Chaupi in about 3 hours driving.

            Day 9: Hike to the Cotopaxi Refuge Altitude: Jose Rivas 15958.01 ft. / 4864 m. From El Chaupi will drive south through the Avenue of the Volcanoes until getting to the Cotopaxi National Park entrance. From here will drive east to the Cotopaxi parking lot (4.500m) then we’ll hike up for around an hour to the Jose Rivas Refuge (4,864m). Then we will have dinner and rest until midnight. At this point we will pack our belongings and get ready to make our final ascent.

            Day 10: Climb Cotopaxi Summit Altitude: 19347.11 ft. / 5897 m.             Day 12: Hike to the Chimborazo High Camp Altitude: 17388.45 feet / 5300 m. In the morning at 9:00 am we will meet with the guides to drive to the Chimborazo wildlife reserve. We will arrive at the refuge Hermanos carrel from there we will start the hike to the High camp in approximately 2 to 3 hours we get to camp once here, we will accommodate in our tents. In the afternoon we will prepare and double check all the gear for the climbing. Where we’ll have dinner and get some rest until 23h00. There will be an early light breakfast served just before getting ready with our gear and start heading up.

We’ll get to the summit (20,702ft/6268) in the early hours the perfect spot for resting and pictures of the beautiful surroundings. Then we’ll start our descending to the refuge; it will take us from 3 to 4 hours. Once in refuge we’ll pack our gear, where our transportation will be ready to drive up to Quito.

            Day 1: Summit Iliniza Norte 

            We start early in the morning 08:00, we will be driving up to the “La Virgen parking lot” (12,795ft/3.900m). Once there, we will start a 3-hour hike up to the “Nuevos Horizontes Refuge” (15,580ft/4.750m). We will relax for couple of minutes and we took the opportunity to put our helmet and harness for continue hiking up towards the saddle formed between both peaks and then head up to Illiniza north summit; it will take us between 2 to 3 hours to get to the summit (5126m), the way back to the parking lot it will take us between 2 hours. Drive back to El Chaupi. Overnight at Ilinizas Mountain Lodge.

            Day 2: Quilotoa Lagoon Rest Day

            We’ll leave from El Chaupi in the morning and will drive the Quilotoa Lagoon; during the tour we will stop at an Indian hut. After we will visit the Tigua community to observe the leather crafts that people make in these places. The tour will take us about 4 hours later, we’ll arrive the viewpoint where you can observe the magnitude of the crater and its lagoon background. We will descend along an irregular road; the walk will take us one hour until arrived bottom of the lagoon, there we will have taken photos and rest. After lunch we will back to El Chaupi in about 3 hours driving.

            From El Chaupi will drive south through the Avenue of the Volcanoes until getting to the Cotopaxi National Park entrance. From here will drive east to the Cotopaxi parking lot (4.500m) then we’ll hike up for around an hour to the Jose Rivas Refuge (4,864m). Then we will have dinner and rest until midnight. At this point we will pack our belongings and get ready to make our final ascent.

            Day 4: Cotopaxi Summit

            Midnight will be our wake-up time and the departure to the top (19,347ft/5.897m) will be around 01h00, not before having a light breakfast and get our stuff ready for the ascent, the climb will take us about 6 to 8 hours. Once at the summit we’ll take our time to take pictures of the crater and surroundings, and then we’ll head down back the refuge, which it will take us 2 to 3 hours. Once at the refuge will pack our belongings, have something to eat and go down to the parking lot, where our transportation will be ready to take us to Baños city. Overnight in the hotel.

            This is a relaxing day; in this beautiful town you can do it different activities that can be purchased on behalf of the passenger. It's a free day its surroundings offer many possibilities like: the route of the waterfalls, hikes inside the “cloud forest”, besides, depending on our interest, with an extra cost, we could try rafting, rock climbing, bungee jumping, mountain biking, horseback riding, etc. Night in hotel.

            Day 6: Chimborazo High Camp

                Day 1: Hike Pasochoa Volcano

                Elevation: 4200 m./13,779 ft

                1. We will pick you up at 8:00 am.Then we will drive for two hours to get to Pasochoa parking lot. We will then hike through a large forest and when we are in the middle of it, the 4230-meter summit will appear. There is a steep sloop on the ascent, but once there we will have beautiful views. We will drive to El Chaupi village. Overnight at Andes Alpes base camp.

                Day 2: Summit Corazón Volcano

                Elevation: 4788 m./15,708 ft

                1. From El Chaupi village. We will start early in the morning after breakfast 7:00 We will be driving up to the trailhead (13,120ft/4.000m), where we start our hike. The first part of the hike takes us up through the small Andean grass. Then we will get on the sandy and scramble section, which leads to Corazon summit. We will have lunch during the hike that is about 6-hour long. Return to the hostel.
