Detailed Program
Day 1: Quito (9,186ft/2800m) – Nuevos Horizontes Hut (15,580ft/4700m)
We’ll leave Quito 7:00 a.m, heading south through the Avenue of the Volcanoes. During the tour we'll pass through the town of Machachi, as well as the beautiful village El Chaupi (Town of small agricultural plots) until we reach the La Virgen Parking Lot (3900m). From here we will hike to the shelter (2 to 3 hours) where we will have lunch and rest. After this, we will continue to the Illiniza Norte Peak, and enjoy both beautiful scenery as well as the adventure of rock climbing that is still suitable for those with little experience. Upon arriving at the summit, you will be able to see unique landscapes and other prominent volcanoes. We will then return to the refuge dinner and an overnight stay. (BL, D)
Day 2: Nuevos Horizontes Refuge (15,580ft/4700m)
This day is for rest and training techniques for climbing Illiniza Sur.
Training will include basic techniques, knots, using the ice axe, crampons, self rescue. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and overnight stay. (B, BL, D)
Day 3: Refugio Nuevos Horizontes – Iliniza Sur (17,267ft/5246m)
Our climbing day starts at 2am. We’ll have a light breakfast, pack our climbing equipment and leave the refuge an hour later. We’ll hike up towards the saddle formed between both peaks and then to the Illiniza Sur summit (17,267ft/5246m) soon after. It will take us between 3 to 4 hours to get to the top. We will then return to the refuge
in around 2 hours. Once here we’ll have something to eat and drink, pack our stuff and return to the La Virgen parking lot to drive back to Quito. (B/BL)
