The complete trek is a 3 day 2 night heavy-duty hike that begins in the Cayambe-Coca Reserve at Papallacta before heading into the Antisana Reserve until it reaches Cotopaxi National Park. The highest altitude of the trek is 4500m / 14,763ft (the base of Volcano Sinc holagua) in Ecuador’s stunning paramo as it passes the Antisana and Cotopaxi mountains.
Day 1: Quito – Laguna del Volcan Camp (12,464ft/3800m).
We will leave Quito in the morning and drive east towards El Tambo Village (11,152ft/3400m) where packhorses will be awaiting us. After loading our equipment on the horses, we’ll start moving on the trail. We will be hiking most of the time on very muddy areas, crossing streams and rivers (rubber boots are more than necessary), and after 4 to 5 hours we will get to our first campsite next to a nice lake, called “Laguna del Volcan” (12,464ft/3800m). Overnight in tents .(BL/D)
Day 2: Laguna del Volcan Camp – Santa Lucia Camp (14,104ft/4300m)
After breakfast, we will start hiking through muddy areas and small forests until we reach higher and drier paramo zones. This will take us about 3 hours. Once here, we still have to hike for another 3 hours admiring the magnificent and massive Antisana glacier and Santa Lucia Lake. We will get at our second camp located in a sheltered valley. Overnight in tents (B/BL/D)
Day 3: Campo Santa Lucia – Quito (9,184ft/2800m)
We’ll begin the hike early in the morning, passing through an area at the Base of Antisana, with a beautiful view of the glacier and then a moderate climb to reach the Lagoon Mica where we have a great view and can enjoy the beautiful scenery. This will take us between 6 and 7 hours, and this stage is the Trek’s best chance to observe deer, llamas, Andean Condor, and other birds of the moors. In the evening, after enjoying one of the best experiences of your life, the car will be ready to return to Quito. (B/ BL)
